February’s Book of the Month

Wonder by Christina C. Jones

Spoilers all up and through this podcast. So, if you haven’t read the book, don’t listen lol. Read our reviews below for some context (those are safe;)) For excerpts, click here.

It all came down to me.

The one who followed the rules, never went looking for trouble – I kept to myself. I just wanted to take care of my family. To not constantly look over my shoulder, worried about the things that went bump in the night.

I just wanted to survive.

But that wasn’t meant to be.

As luck – or fate, or something – would have it, the trouble found me.

I followed a rabbit through the wreckage of a half-ruined world to get back what was mine, and wound up at the end of it.

In Wonderland.

But there’s nothing magical about it.

(While Wonder does feature a central love story, it is not a contemporary romance novel)

Renee’s Review

I read this book in only two nights due to my busy schedule. I was hooked from the start. The author had a pre-release thoughts video that I watched, and it made me skeptical about what it would be. I planned on reading it anyway since the last thing I read from Christina C. Jones put a smile on my face. Even still, I braced myself.

Once I started reading, what she said about it made sense. But it wasn’t at all what I thought it would be. It was so much better.

The characters were loosely based from those in Alice in Wonderland, which the author pointed out. For some reason, I imagined magic and fairytale type themes. Uh, no. It was so real and still relatable even though it’s a post-apocalyptic setting.

If I had known a post-apocalyptic story could be this good, I’d read them all the time. The relation to Alice in Wonderland was pretty cool. You will catch on to the similarities in not only name spinoffs, but the characters’ personalities.

Aly and Maddox were fun to watch, per se. Their different environments and mind frames differed but flowed so well as the two interacted with one another. I don’t want to say too much, you gotta find out for yourself 😉

The pain from the earth’s destruction was felt in the lifestyle of the characters as well as the new world they called home. Rules, laws, control, rations, sterilization, you name it. All the fears we’d have were their reality.

In the end, I can say you will love this book. Whether you are familiar with the author or not. This is only the second book I’ve read and the first was a short Christmas story. So, the only expectation I had was that she was obviously a great storyteller. The same rings true in Wonder, if not more.

Bridgette’s Review

Wonder had me wondering if I was gonna continue to the end…js. I should have read and watched the preface that was listed; then I believe I would have had a better understanding, maybe. I don’t believe I have ever read a book with so-called fairytale characters, just not my preference.

Wonder piqued my interest in Chapter 6. Christina, Christina, you showed out then! Some of my new friends in Wonderland were a trip. Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum know they got on my nerves lol. Alyson seemed to be the most inexperienced, but she sure knew how to stand up for herself.

I could really see the Burrows and the Mids in the end of the world type of scenery.

Maddox and Alyson had some steam come out of that basement and her humble abode … Hunty, they did that… Job well done Ms. Christina. You took me out on a limb but soon brought me back in.

Telicia’s Review

I really enjoyed this book! I give it 5 stars b/c the author made me feel like I was there. Every detail that was explained in the beginning I saw it. I loved some characters, dislike one. Kept me entertained, glad I read it.
